2-day mug intensive workshop | Nov 21st + 22nd
THE MUG INTENSIVE
Spend two days going deep on the craft of making a really good mug.
This hands-on intensive is focused entirely on mug making—from developing a balanced form on the wheel to pulling or forming and attaching comfortable, well-proportioned handles. Rather than making a single mug and calling it a day, you'll have the time and space to experiment, make multiples, and refine your technique.
Class dates and times: Saturday November 21st from 9am-12pm and Sunday November 22nd from 9am-2pm with breaks for lunch/snack.
Day One: Saturday November 21st 9am-12pm — Form + Throwing
We'll explore what makes a mug feel good in the hand and function well in everyday use, including proportion, wall thickness, rim design, shape, and balance. After a demonstration, you'll throw multiple mug forms on the wheel, giving you the opportunity to experiment with different shapes and develop consistency.
Day Two: Sunday November 22nd 9am-2pm — Trimming + Handles + Finishing
We'll focus on one of the most important—and often trickiest—parts of mug making: the handle. You'll learn how to pull handles directly from clay and from the pot, as well as other techniques for creating handles. We’ll explore different handle shapes and profiles while considering comfort, proportion, balance, and attachment. You'll practice making multiple handles before selecting and attaching your favourites to your mugs.
We'll finish by refining your forms, cleaning up attachments, and adding simple surface details.
You'll leave the intensive with up to 3 mugs to be glazed and fired at Kōbō, along with techniques you can continue developing in your own ceramic practice. All tools and materials are included, pots are fired and glazed for you after the workshop.
What's included
8 hours of hands-on instruction over two days
Clay, tools and studio glazes
Firing of up to 3 finished mugs
$225 + GST | 6 spots
Some previous wheel experience is recommended. This workshop is designed for students who are comfortable with the basics of centering and throwing and are ready to focus on refining their skills.
